Li-Ion Batteries

To ensure appropriate power supply to all spacecraft subsystems during eclipse phase, ALMASpace have tested and selected different types of batteries.
Among the different technologies, Li-Ion batteries have been selected for microsatellite platforms power storage for their capacity-to-weight ratio almost three times larger than other commercially available battery cells. This makes them suitable for the demanding charge/discharge regime in low-Earth orbit,
ALMASpace can provide battery packs assemblies making use of commercial Li-Ion cells and using space qualified materials.
The cell selection and matching process is carried out by our proprietary testing system.
Charge and discharge phases can be fully regulated by the Battery Charge/Discharge Regulator (available on request), which integrates a battery charger capable to produce the charging profile (constant current in the first phase and then constant voltage) required by Li-Ion batteries. The Li-Ion cells we have selected have a nominal capacity of 2600mAh (minimum 2550 mAh) a nominal voltage of 3.7 V, a maximum charge current of 2600 mA and a max. discharge current of 5200 mA.
